Health insurance protects your financial worth at the expense of a monthly contribution. Preparing for disasters is one of the most important things you must do for yourself. Your employees’ health must also be considered when you run your own business.

On average, health insurance costs $456 for an individual and $1,152 for families. Start-ups, beginning entrepreneurs, and freelancers purchase health insurance to protect their principal.

It prevents catastrophic payments, but it incurs expensive monthly costs.

Health sharing plans provide alternatives. They cost less than health insurance and provide similar medical coverage. Entering a health sharing plan requires you to follow guidelines by the organization in exchange for this cheap cost.

Below contains some of the top-rated medical sharing plans. Most of the medical sharing plans come from Christian-based non-profit organizations.

Medi-Share

Medi-Share is a Florida non-for-profit Christian organization. They started in 1993, driven to share the medical burden of their community. They now have over 400,000 members and more than $2.6 billion of medical bills shared.

Joining Medi-Share requires one to profess their Christian testimony and Statement of Faith. They require abstinence from tobacco and alcohol for at least 12 months prior to joining. Their members must not practice sexual acts outside marriage.

Their price ranges from $9,000 to $12,000 annually. This price is dependent on the number of people joining. Your family will be included in the consideration of your price contribution.

A member must meet their annual household portion (AHP) over a 12-month period before their medical needs can be shouldered by the community.

They offer free 24/7 doctor appointments, in-person doctor visits, and emergency visits. Their 24/7 doctor appointments accommodate unlimited telehealth service. They also offer unlimited healthcare bills once you are eligible.

You can apply online through their website if you meet their criteria.

Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM)

Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM) prides itself as being the oldest health sharing program in the United States. They have over $6 billion in expenses shared over a 40-year history.

Interested applicants must be Christians who do not practice any smoking (includes smoking devices, such as e-cigarettes) and alcohol. They should not participate in premarital sex.

They offer three pricing plans for their members. Bronze, silver, and gold plans cost $78, $118, and $172, respectively. The gold plan extends medical coverage until maternity needs. Participants are limited to up to $250,000 in medical expenses per medical need.

CHM has been preferred by many for its long history and clear guidelines in eligibility and pricing. Their online application can be filled out on their website once you meet their eligibility criteria.

Samaritan Ministries

Samaritan Ministries focuses on helping their Christian community harness its collective strength through medical sharing. Started in 1994, their 25-year mission has blossomed to be one of the most appealing medical sharing plan providers.

They require their applicants to profess their Christian faith. And they encourage the practice of following the Bible as a way of life, as stated in their historical roots: “[Galatians 6:2] Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ”.

Members with pre-existing conditions have up to a five-year waiting period before getting their share on medical bills.

A $400 initial unshareable amount (IUA) will be placed per medical need. Their monthly contribution prices depend on the members, age, marital status, and type of sharing plan chosen. They observe a $250,000 limit per medical need per member.

Eligible applicants can join Samaritan Ministries and their medical sharing plans online by signing up on their website.

OneShare Health

OneShare Health is a Christian community originated from the Anabaptist faith. Their mission includes providing affordable medical sharing plans for their members.

Members of OneShare Health profess their Christian faith and follow their core beliefs. The organization places their core biblical beliefs as vital to being a member. They encourage their community to stay healthy while following the scriptures and giving back to their community.

They offer three types of pricing plans: (1) Catastrophic, (2) Classic, and (3) Complete, arranged in increasing advantages. The monthly contribution starts at $115. It adjusts to the members’ family member count, age, program chosen, and demographics.

Members with pre-existing conditions have a 24-month waiting period before getting a share of their medical needs. They also offer a member assistance program in times of medical crisis.

OneShare Health offers a wide network of health professionals under a relatively affordable price. They send a $100 e-gift card when you refer a new member. All of their applications are done online.

Zion Health

Zion Health was founded in 2019 by Nathan Udy. He wanted to reimagine health sharing plans. They have become one of the fastest growing communities of health sharing providers.

Zion Health welcomes diverse demographics and religions. They do not require their members to be affiliated with any religion to join.

Their pricing starts at $139 per individual, and the rates change based on the age range and family member count. A member must first pay their IUA before having their medical expenses shared to the community. Members who smoke have add-on rates.

Members can enjoy unlimited medical expenses after paying their IUA. After paying their IUA for three different needs, Zion Health shoulders the rest of the burden until their annual billing date renews.

The organization extends their mission outside the United States. On their website, they express their eligibility to help other members abroad. They offer 24/7 telehealth services without consultation fees.

Employers can avail special rates for their employees’ medical sharing plans. Online enrollment to Zion Health can be done on their website.

Other organizations offer health sharing products ranging in both pricing plans and member eligibility. Most of them originate from Christian beliefs. When availing health sharing plans, one must focus on the health coverage behind each plan.

To reiterate, health sharing plans are different from health insurance. They are cheaper and have different terms and conditions and eligibility criteria.
